Still, Black’s plot isn’t without its strengths. This feeling is all but missing in Darker than Black, and in its place is an uneven, somnambulant narrative that lurches and groans under its own weight, even as it delivers clever premises and interesting twists. There was a giddy, off-beat, almost poetic flow to the series, which was a major part of what made Cowboy Bebop such an entertaining work. Sadly, Cowboy Bebop’s story might just have been one of a kind. However, the same hodgepodge of genres and episodic story structure is here, as well as some other familiar themes and motifs (The Girl who Haunts the Hero's Past, the ephemeral nature of life, etc). Also, Darker than Black, true to its title, starts out somewhat moodier than Cowboy Bebop's beginning. The series' plot is, at least superficially, very different. To be sure, Black isn't a total carbon copy. The problem, of course, is that Darker than Black is not Cowboy Bebop. There is such a noticeable similarity between the two series that comparing them is virtually unavoidable. It's an amazing watch that deserves more recognition.StoryDarker than Black wants to be Cowboy Bebop so badly, it hurts. I've watched it completely through 3 times, and am still noticing little things I didn't see before. But don't let that deter you it does have its share of funny moments, especially in the OVA episode 26. It is a seinen (for adults), so it tends to have a more serious and grounded feel, as well as many deaths. They're both equally as important, which is nice considering most series' go for one or the other. Not only that, neither plot nor character development suffer. They don't reveal anything too quickly or slowly the pace is just right. But by the middle, we start to see a continuous plot strung through it, emerging more and more as we go along. The series goes into 2-episode "mini-arcs" or storylines for the majority of its run. Not to say the first 4 are bad, they're just not some of my favorites. It may start out a little slow, and even confusing for some people, but it really picks up around episode 5. Not to mention the soundtrack, which fits very nicely and it pleasant to hear. The animation was done by the studio BONES, which guarantees smooth and seamless scenes all across the board. It has an engaging story with absolutely amazing characters to back it up. An amazing anime to add to your collection.ĭarker than BLACK has easily become one of my favorite animes of all time.
